THE VOID FIELD GUIDE / PRACTICAL MASTERING

Shape tone with trim and EQ.

Make deliberate level and tonal changes before reaching for more aggressive processing.

Before you start: open the current VOID studio in a modern browser. These instructions describe the development release and use locally generated demonstration audio in screenshots.

Start with a question

Name what you want to change before moving a control: less low-end buildup, a clearer midrange, or a gentler top end. EQ changes the balance of the entire mix. It cannot isolate an instrument the way a multitrack session can.

01 / Open the manual chain

Import your WAV, switch to Advanced and expand the manual processing chain. Locate Trim and EQ. Each module has its own bypass and ordering controls. The order matters because each processor receives the output of the preceding one.

02 / Make a small move

Use Trim to adjust the level feeding the chain. EQ provides low and high shelves plus a mid band with frequency, gain and Q. Start with a small gain change and listen across more than one passage. A narrower mid-band Q focuses the adjustment more tightly; a broader setting affects a wider region.

03 / Check the consequence

Toggle bypass and compare at similar perceived loudness. Listen for whether the original problem improved and whether something else became worse. Extra level into dynamics, clipping or limiting can change their behavior even if the EQ move sounded subtle in isolation.

Render again after your final adjustment, review the output and keep a named version or chain file if you want to return to this decision.

Keep learning

Control dynamics. Keep the movement.

Compare the sound, not just the volume.
